REMEMBERING DAVID ROMPREY

Tragically, long time human rights activist David Romprey passed away
suddenly on July 30, 2008. David was a father, Oregonian, psychiatric
survivor, mental health consumer, advocate, community organizer,
friend and supporter of MindFreedom and our social change movement.

MFI WINS HELIOS MATCHING GRANT

Thanks to the generous donations from our new members, MindFreedom
reached its $500 fundraising goal to win the matching grant from the
Helios Resource Network. Thank you!

The $500 in matching funds will be used to support MindFreedom’s
Youth Campaign, and will help fund a ‘Green Your Mind Fair’ in Lane
County. The fair will include skits, forums and videos.

We would like to thank the Helios Resource Network for providing
MindFreedom with this great opportunity. Thank you!

VIGILS FOR ESMIN ELIZABETH GREEN HELD IN THREE NATIONS

On July 25, 2008 MindFreedom co-sponsored vigils held to honor the
memory of Esmin Green and to condemn human rights violations.

Esmin Green died on June 19 while waiting for a bed to become
available in the King County Hospital Center’s Psychiatric Emergency
Room. She had already been waiting for nearly 24 hours when she
collapsed, and surveillance footage shows that another hour had
nearly passed before she received medical attention.

Vigils were held outside King County Hospital in New York, USA, in
Eugene, Oregon, USA, in Toronto, Canada, and in Cork, Ireland.

DAVID OAKS TO SPEAK AT WORLD PSYCHIATRIC CONFERENCE

Every three years, the World Psychiatric Association holds a World
Congress. The WPA has invited MFI executive director David W. Oaks to
be a “special presenter” on human rights at the Congress on 22
September 2008 in Prague.

OREGON CONSUMER SURVIVOR COALITION MEETS WITH OREGON GOVERNOR

In June, a delegation from the Oregon Consumer Survivor Coalition,
which MindFreedom Oregon helped found, met with Governor Ted
Kulongoski to discuss mental health and consumer affairs in Oregon.
